春、桜の季節はどこか夢見心地。

満開の桜並木の中、宴が開かれていればなおさら。

 

ミッドタウン・ガーデンの桜がひらくとともに現れる、春だけの街路「BLOSSOM AVENUE.」。桜色に染まった標識や信号機といった、見たことがあるような、ないようなモノたちが、六本木の交差点からガーデンの中へ、うつつと夢のあいだをつなぎます。

 

短期間の仮設であるイベント装飾では、基礎やアンカーを設けにくく、大きな土台やトラス、ウエイトなど仮設感を伴う要素が生じがちです。今回のMIDTOWN BLOSSOMでは、満開の桜並木の中で過ごす時間や屋外展示の体験を損なわないよう、それらをできる限り見せない方法を検討しました。

そこで、遊歩道に立つ既存の街灯を支持体として読み替えることで、基礎を新たに設けることなくメインの演出を構成しています。街灯に取り付くものとして、標識や信号機といった物が選ばれたのは自然な流れでした。

 

信号機を模したオブジェには押しボタンがあり、押すと信号は桜からウグイスへと変わり、「ホーホケキョ」という鳴き声が流れます。そこから桜並木へと導くように、遊歩道に沿って交通にまつわるオブジェクトが点在します。

再帰反射で図と地が反転する誘導標識、

速度制限のように開花具合を示す標識。

 

仕掛けを見つけながら歩みを進めるにつれ、感覚はゆるやかにほどけ、やがて桜並木の中へと没入していきます。都会と自然のあわいにある入口において、そのグラデーションを立ち上げることで、非日常を楽しむための身体が静かに整っていく——そんな体験の動線を設計しました。

As the sakura begin to open in Midtown Garden, a street that exists only in this season emerges: BLOSSOM AVENUE. Signs and traffic lights, tinted in cherry-blossom pink—objects both familiar and unfamiliar—connect the Roppongi intersection to the garden, bridging the threshold between the everyday and the dreamlike.

 

Temporary event installations rarely allow for foundations or anchors; stability often depends on large bases, trusses, or weights that make their provisional nature visible. For MIDTOWN BLOSSOM, these elements were minimized to avoid disrupting the experience of the blossoms and the outdoor artworks.

Instead, the existing streetlights along the promenade were reinterpreted as structural supports, allowing the installation to be composed without introducing new foundations. It followed naturally to adopt elements typically attached to such infrastructure—signs and traffic lights—as the primary components.

 

The signal-like objects include push buttons; when pressed, the light shifts from sakura to uguisu, accompanied by the call “hoh-hokekyo.” Along the path, traffic-inspired elements guide visitors toward the cherry-lined avenue: crosswalks, rotating arrows forming three-word phrases of spring, reflective signs where figure and ground invert, and markers resembling speed limits that indicate the stage of bloom.

 

As visitors move through the sequence, discovering these elements, perception gradually loosens and recalibrates, leading into immersion within the cherry blossoms. At this threshold between city and nature, the design constructs a subtle gradient—quietly tuning the body toward a non-everyday state, and shaping the path into it.
