FDM（熱溶解積層法）式3Dプリンターは扱いが簡単で安価なことから、広く普及しています。
しかし、綺麗に出力しようとすると長い時間がかかりながら、積層痕が残るため後処理が必要だったり、時には途中で断層ができて失敗したりと、出力したものが美観も備えた商品としてそのまま成り立つほどの生産性は、まだありません。
本プロジェクトではその未完成な出力状態を逆手に取り、綺麗さよりも短時間を優先した設定で粗めに出力したオブジェクトにパテ盛り+研磨を施すことで、断層や積層痕を均しています。
この作業は一般的には塗装の下地として使われる工程ですが、本プロジェクトではフィラメントとパテの積層から削り出されるその偶発的な色と柄を、工芸品のような表情として肯定的に捉え、仕上げとしました。

工芸品の中でも、市井の人々が使うごく当たり前で安価な品を、朝市に立つ商人たちは「下手物（げてもの）」と呼んでいました。
美の対象として顧みられることのなかったそれら下手物のなかに、素材や手仕事に根付いたアノニマスで素朴な美を発見し、それこそが本来の工芸品の美のあり方であるべき、と説いたのが柳宗理らの民藝運動でした。
本プロジェクトは、3Dデータから世界中どこでも同じものを出力できるデジタルファブリケーションの市民的なあり方と、そこに個々人が手作業によって加工をほどこすことで生まれる１点物の工芸品の価値を掛け合わせた、「未来の民芸」となり得る表現手法と考え、gete（げて）と名付けました。
FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) 3D printers are widely used because of their ease of use and low cost.
However, the output is not yet productive enough to be used as an aesthetic product-for-sale, as it takes a long time to produce a fine surface and requires post-processing due to the stacking marks.
In this project, to turn that negative into a positive, we smooth the surface by applying putty into the stacking marks and polishing, after printing the object in a very fast & rough settings.
This process is generally used as a base for painting, but in this project, the accidental colors and patterns carved out of the stacking marks of filament and putty were viewed positively as a craft-like expression and used as a finishing.

Among the Japanese folk crafts, the common and inexpensive items used by the common people were called "getemono" by the merchants at the morning market.
The Mingei (folk art) movement, led by Sori Yanagi and others, discovered the anonymity and simple beauty rooted in materials and handwork inside these goods that had never been considered as objects of beauty, and argued that this should be the true beauty of crafts.
This project is named "gete" because it is a method of expression that could become the "folk art of the future" by combining the civic way of digital fabrication, which allows us to output the same thing from 3D data anywhere in the world, and the value of one-of-a-kind crafts that are created by individuals processing them by hand.
